Diablo II is a dark fantasy/horror-themed hack and slash, with elements of the role-playing game and dungeon crawl genres.
Diablo II was one of the most popular games of 2000. An expansion to Diablo II, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, was released in 2001.
Diablo 2
The storyline of Diablo II progresses through four acts, with each act following a more or less predetermined path and list of quests. Some quests are optional. The player assumes the role of a hero from one of five different character classes. Players fight monsters through wilderness areas and dungeons in order to level-up their character and gain better items. Combat is in real-time, and shown from an isometric viewpoint. Players also have the option of hiring one of several computer-controlled mercenaries, or hirelings, that follow the player and attack nearby enemies. A powerful boss monster awaits the player at the end of each act. Item drops, monster attributes, and most dungeon layouts are randomly-generated by Diablo II.
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
More than a standard expansion, Lord of Destruction not only added content in the form of two new character classes, new weapons and an addition of a fifth act, but also dramatically revamped the gameplay of the existing Diablo II for solo and especially multiplayer.
Features
Lord of Destruction adds a number of new features to the core gameplay of Diablo II. These include:
Two new character classes: the Assassin and the Druid.
A fifth act taking place in and around Mount Arreat in the northern Barbarian Highlands, with an additional act boss, Baal.
Many new weapons and new pieces of armor:
Runes can be placed into sockets and provide different bonuses from gems.
Using Horadric Cube, needed quest item for Act 2 and runes as recipes, one can empower the items. The process is called "cubing."
"Crafted items" are very similar to rare items but they cannot be found in chests or dropped by monsters. They can be created with the Horadric Cube and the right ingredients. They have 3-4 fixed properties that will enhance the items.
"Runewords" are very powerful bonuses that are granted to an item when specific runes are socketed in a specific order.
"Jewels" gain the same random bonuses that items can. These can be placed into sockets. They have the same effect no matter what the base item is. Unique jewels are "Rainbow Facets" which have different bonuses to a certain element.
Ethereal items that are normally more powerful than their standard counterparts, but they have lowered durability and cannot be repaired.
Charms that can be kept in the inventory and provide passive bonuses.
Class-specific items that can only be used by a certain character, e.g. Claws for an Assassin.
Additional unique and set items, including class-specific sets.
An expanded stash for storing items—two times the size of the original stash.
An alternate weapon/shield/spell setup that can be switched to via a hotkey in gameplay.
Hirelings can now follow the player through all the Acts. They can also be equipped with armor and a weapon, can gain their own experience (originally they leveled up with the player), can be healed by potions, and can be resurrected when killed.
The game can now be played at 800x600 resolution, up from 640x480.

CPU: Diablo II: Lord of Destruction requires a Pentium-compatible 233 MHz processor or better.
Memory: 32 MB of RAM is required for Single Player mode. 64 MB of RAM is required for Multiplayer mode. Open Battle.net game Creators and TCP/IP game Hosts: 128MB RAM recommended (256MB RAM in games with over 4 players).
Hard Drive Space: Installation of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction occupies a minimum of 1.5 GB of your hard drive space - 950 MB for the Multiplayer installation of Diablo II and another 550 MB for the Expansion Set, itself.
Video: Diablo II: Lord of Destruction requires an SVGA video card and a monitor capable of displaying 800 x 600 pixels at a color depth of at least 256 colors.
3D accelerators compatible with Glide or Direct3D are supported. Diablo II: Lord of Destruction requires 8MB of texture RAM.
Sound: Diablo II: Lord of Destruction requires a DirectX-compatible sound card. Diablo II: Lord of Destruction supports sound cards with 3D positioning and environmental audio effects, like reverberation and occlusion. Be sure to configure your sound driver and position your speakers to get the optimum audio performance from your system.
